In an industry historically dominated by men, women haven’t been represented as much as they should as photographers. Here with KODAKIT, we believe in highlighting the photographers; both men and women, giving them equal stage time.
Today, we draw our attentions to Dee Alkhatib, a freelance photographer based in Singapore. Constantly learning and working on new ideas and creations, we asked her to fill us in on her passion for photography.
How did you get started shooting photography?
All I remember was I developed interest while I was in secondary school. I wanted to join the Photography Club for my CCA but being a student with having only day to day pocket money and not coming from a well-to-do family, I couldn’t as everyone has to be equipped with their own DSLR and I definitely can’t afford one. Without realizing, I end up spending those years using my camera phone and there I discovered photography is my thing. With the upgrade of mobile camera qualities now, it’s just a button away.
What types of photography do you specialize in?
I do bridal, maternity, portrait, concert and landscape photography.
What is your favorite thing about your photography career?
Meeting new people. Sharing some things that are meant to be shared. My passion, dedication and perseverance to always try out new ideas that crosses my mind although sometimes I think that my imaginative shots may just be too tedious to execute but I love the challenge of portraying how beautiful imperfection is. Lastly, photo editing is definitely my favourite part of the photography process, and I’m always driven by this quote when I’m in my “own world” editing. Quoted by Spike Jonze: You build something in the editing room that’s shaped by getting to know the person and digging deeper, unpeeling the layers of them as you get to know them.
Of all the photos you’ve shot, which one is your favorite? Why?
This shot taken in 2013. Firstly, it was the location that made my jaw drop as it was the first time I came across mountain of sands/rocks like this in Singapore and when I already had my editing style in mind then. Secondly this was a test shot. Thirdly, these friends of mine met through Asia Pacific InstaMeet organized by @Gf_Singapore sometime back, and they are now married to one another. How awesome can that be?
Is there a photo session you’ve always wanted to shoot, but haven’t gotten a chance?
Definitely. That would be Surreal and also Newborn Photography.
